As 1958 drew to a close and the New Year dawned, cricket lovers gathered in massive numbers at the iconic Eden Gardens, the beating heart of cricket in Calcutta. The occasion was the 3rd Test of the 1958–59 India vs West Indies series, played from December 31, 1958, to January 4, 1959. The West Indies innings was a masterclass in domination. Conrad Hunte (172) led the charge with a majestic innings full of elegant drives and perfect timing. He was supported by the brilliance of Garfield Sobers (142), whose effortless strokeplay left the Eden Gardens crowd in awe.

Rohan Kanhai (92) and Basil Butcher (103)* added to India’s misery, piling up runs with ease.

India’s bowlers, despite their perseverance, had no answers to the Caribbean storm. Subhash Gupte and Borde were the only wicket-takers as West Indies declared at a mammoth 614/5.
